What Are Lab-Grown Diamonds? Your Ultimate Guide
Vai Ra Jewellery Education · Diamond Guide
What they are, how they are made, and why they are identical to mined diamonds in every way that matters.
A lab grown diamond is a real diamond. Not a simulant, not an imitation, not a diamond substitute — a diamond, grown in a controlled environment rather than extracted from the earth. The carbon structure, the hardness, the refractive index, the optical properties: identical in every measurable way to a mined diamond.
What follows is a straightforward explanation of what lab grown diamonds are, how they are made, how they compare to mined diamonds, and what you actually need to know before choosing one — without the marketing language.
Watch — Lab Grown vs Natural Diamond Explained
Key differences between lab grown and natural diamonds — price, clarity, and certification
What is a lab grown diamond?
A lab grown diamond is pure carbon arranged in a cubic crystal structure — chemically, physically, and optically identical to a diamond formed deep in the earth over billions of years. The only difference is where and how it was created. One grew under the ground. The other was grown in a laboratory in a matter of weeks.
A gemologist with a standard loupe cannot tell them apart. Neither can a diamond tester — both conduct heat identically. Distinguishing a lab grown diamond from a mined one requires specialist equipment that detects trace differences in crystal growth patterns, not anything visible to the eye.
A lab grown diamond is not a diamond alternative. It is a diamond — grown above ground rather than mined below it.
The term "synthetic diamond" sometimes appears in older literature, but it is misleading. Synthetic implies artificial or fake. Lab grown diamonds are neither — they are the same material, grown through a different process. At Vai Ra, we use the term lab grown diamond, which is the industry standard used by the International Gemological Institute (IGI) and most certification bodies worldwide.
How are lab grown diamonds made?
There are two methods used to grow diamonds in a laboratory. Both start with a tiny diamond seed — a sliver of existing diamond crystal — and both build on it, layer by layer, until a full diamond is formed.
High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT)
This method replicates the conditions under which natural diamonds form in the earth — extreme pressure and extreme heat. A diamond seed is placed in a chamber with a carbon source and subjected to pressures of around 1.5 million pounds per square inch and temperatures exceeding 1,400°C. Carbon atoms attach to the seed and crystallise into a diamond over a period of days to weeks.
Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD)
CVD is a lower-pressure process. A diamond seed is placed in a sealed chamber filled with a carbon-rich gas — typically methane. The gas is energised using microwave plasma, breaking the molecular bonds and releasing carbon atoms that deposit onto the seed layer by layer, building a diamond from the inside out. CVD diamonds can be grown at lower temperatures and produce larger, higher-clarity stones with greater consistency.
Vai Ra Note
All lab grown diamonds at Vai Ra are IGI certified — the international standard for lab diamond grading. Every certificate confirms the stone's carat weight, cut, colour, and clarity. We stock DEF colour, VVS clarity as standard. No lower grades. Set in BIS hallmarked 10KT, 14KT, 18KT or 22KT gold, or platinum.
Lab grown vs mined diamond — the full comparison
Here is how lab grown and mined diamonds compare across the properties that matter when choosing fine jewellery.
| Property | Lab Grown Diamond | Mined Diamond |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical composition | Pure carbon — identical to mined diamond. | Pure carbon. |
| Hardness | 10 on the Mohs scale — the hardest known material. Scratch-proof under all everyday conditions. | 10 on the Mohs scale. No practical durability difference. |
| Optical properties | Refractive index of 2.42. Same brilliance, fire, and scintillation as a mined diamond. | Refractive index of 2.42. Identical optical performance. |
| Colour & clarity | Available in D–F colourless grades, VVS clarity. Vai Ra stocks DEF VVS as standard. | D–F VVS grades available at significant premium. Most affordable natural diamonds carry visible inclusions. |
| Certification | IGI certified at Vai Ra — the global standard for lab grown diamond grading. | GIA or IGI certified. Certification is essential given the wide variance in mined diamond quality. |
| Price | ₹35,000 per carat at Vai Ra — fixed, transparent pricing for an IGI-certified DEF VVS stone. | ₹3,00,000 and above per carat for a D–F VVS stone. Price reflects rarity, not visual performance. |
| Origin & ethics | Lab created. No mining. Fully traceable, conflict-free origin. | Mined from the earth. Requires Kimberley Process certification for conflict-free sourcing. |
| Environmental impact | Significantly lower carbon footprint than mined diamonds. No land displacement or water table disruption. | Open-pit mining has well-documented environmental impact — land disruption, water use, carbon emissions. |
Are lab grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. This question comes up often, and the answer is unambiguous. Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds. The Federal Trade Commission in the United States ruled in 2018 that the definition of a diamond does not require geological formation — it is defined by its carbon crystal structure, which lab grown diamonds share completely.
The IGI, which certifies every lab grown diamond at Vai Ra, grades them using the same 4Cs framework used for mined diamonds — cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. The certificate does not say "lab grown diamond simulant." It says "lab grown diamond."
The carbon in a lab grown diamond is the same carbon as in a mined diamond. The crystal structure is the same. The hardness is the same. The sparkle is the same. The origin is the only difference.
What lab grown diamonds are not: cubic zirconia (which is zirconium oxide, much softer, and visually distinct under magnification), moissanite (silicon carbide — a different gemstone entirely, though also beautiful and certified at Vai Ra), or glass. These are entirely different materials. A lab grown diamond is a diamond.
Why choose a lab grown diamond?
The same stone at a fraction of the price
A 1 carat IGI-certified lab grown diamond at Vai Ra costs ₹35,000 — fixed pricing, no negotiation. A natural diamond of the same grading (D–F colour, VVS clarity) starts from ₹3 lakh and climbs steeply with size. The visual difference to the naked eye is zero. The price difference is significant, and it can go toward a better setting, a higher gold karat, or a larger stone.
Certified and traceable
Every lab grown diamond at Vai Ra is IGI certified. The certificate is issued by an independent laboratory before the stone reaches us — it is not a Vai Ra document, it is an international grading report verifying the stone's exact specifications. You know precisely what you are buying.
Consistent quality
Because lab grown diamonds are produced under controlled conditions, the quality at a given grade is highly consistent. A DEF VVS lab grown diamond is a DEF VVS stone — there is very little variance in practice. With natural diamonds, even stones of the same grade can vary considerably in how they perform visually, which is why independent certification matters even more.
Ethical and conflict-free
Lab grown diamonds carry no mining-related ethical concerns. There is no Kimberley Process to navigate, no provenance to verify, no questions about which region the stone came from or under what conditions it was extracted. The origin of every lab grown diamond at Vai Ra is known, traceable, and clean.
Lower environmental footprint
Open-pit diamond mining involves significant land displacement, water use, and carbon emissions. Lab grown diamonds require energy to produce — primarily electricity — but the overall environmental footprint is substantially lower than mined diamond extraction at equivalent scale.
