Moissanite Mookhuthi in 18KT Gold — A Nose Pin Worth Keeping
Vai Ra · Piercing & Nose Pin Collection
The mookhuthi has been worn across South Indian households for generations. We made it in moissanite and 18KT gold.
In South India, the mookhuthi is not an accessory. It is a given — part of how women dress, how they mark occasion, how they carry themselves every day. A tiny thing with a long history, worn from girlhood through a lifetime.
What was not always available was a mookhuthi worth keeping for that lifetime. One set in real gold. With a stone that would not cloud, scratch, or fade. Vai Ra's mookhuthi collection changes that — eight designs in 18KT BIS-hallmarked gold, each set with DEF-VVS moissanite, made to be worn every single day.
The Mookhuthi — A Brief History
The word mookhuthi comes from the Tamil mookku (nose) and uthi (pin) — literally, a pin for the nose. Across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka, the mookhuthi has been a fixture of everyday dress for centuries. Unlike the elaborate nath of North India, the mookhuthi is characteristically small, close to the nostril, and worn without a chain — built for everyday life rather than ceremony.
Traditionally set in gold with a small stone — often a ruby, emerald, or pearl — the design has changed little over generations. What has changed is access to finer stones at accessible prices. Moissanite, with its diamond-equivalent hardness and DEF clarity, brings a quality of sparkle to the mookhuthi that was once reserved for much higher price points.
Every tradition deserves the best materials it can be made in. The mookhuthi is no different.
Why Moissanite — For a Nose Pin Specifically
A nose pin is worn closer to your face than almost any other piece of jewellery. It is in every photograph. It catches light at every angle. The stone matters more here than in a piece worn lower on the body.
Moissanite at DEF-VVS clarity is near-flawless and colourless — which means even at 2.5mm or 3mm diameter, it reads as a clean, bright point of light. The brilliance is immediate. There is no cloudiness, no warmth to the colour, no inclusions visible even at close range.
At 9.25 on the Mohs scale, moissanite is also one of the hardest gemstones available. A nose pin is subjected to daily handling — putting it in, taking it out, cleaning the piercing. A softer stone would scratch and dull within months. Moissanite does not.
The Vai Ra Standard
Every mookhuthi in this collection is set with DEF-VVS moissanite in 18KT BIS-hallmarked gold. 18KT gold is the recommended karat for nose piercings — pure enough to be hypoallergenic, with enough alloy content to hold its shape and resist daily wear. All pieces are handcrafted at our Hyderabad studio and quality-checked before dispatch.
The Collection — Eight Designs
From a 2.5mm minimal round to the ornate Lakshmi — there is a mookhuthi here for every preference, from everyday understated to occasion-worthy. Each piece can also be worn as a helix or cartilage piercing earring.
How to Choose — A Size and Style Guide
Start with the size
The 2.5mm Tiny Round Stud is the most minimal option — a barely-there point of light, ideal if you prefer jewellery that does not announce itself. The 3mm Round Stud has noticeably more presence while remaining classic and clean. Both read as traditional mookhuthi sizes and work for everyday wear from morning to evening.
The Three Round Prong, Dandelion, and Flower designs are slightly more decorative — still everyday-appropriate, but with more visual interest at close range. These are good choices if you want the mookhuthi to read as a considered piece rather than a simple stud.
The Lakshmi — for occasions
The Lakshmi is a different piece entirely. It is the most elaborate design in the collection — a detailed Lakshmi motif with moissanite stones throughout. This is a piece for weddings, pujas, and occasions where the mookhuthi is part of a full jewellery look. It is not an everyday stud; it is a statement worn with intention.
The Septum Nose Ring
For those with a septum piercing, the Septum Nose Ring is the only dedicated septum piece in the collection. It is set in 18KT gold with moissanite and fits a standard septum piercing gauge. If you are unsure about fit or gauge, message us on WhatsApp before ordering.
Not sure which fits your piercing?
Every mookhuthi in this collection can also be worn as a helix, cartilage, or flat-back piercing earring — they are not nose-pin-only designs. If you are buying for a specific piercing type and unsure about the backing or gauge, message us on WhatsApp or book a free consultation before placing your order. We will confirm what works for your piercing.
Why 18KT Gold — And Not 22KT
Most traditional mookhuthis are made in 22KT gold. Vai Ra's collection uses 18KT — and there is a specific reason for that choice.
22KT gold is 91.6% pure. That purity makes it soft — which is fine for a bangle or chain that does not flex under pressure, but a problem for a nose pin that is inserted and removed daily. Soft gold bends. The prongs holding the stone loosen. Over time, the stone can come loose.
18KT gold is 75% pure, with the remaining 25% made up of harder alloy metals. It holds its shape. The prongs stay firm. The stone stays set. For a piece worn and handled every day, 18KT is the right choice — and all Vai Ra mookhuthis carry the BIS hallmark certifying that purity.
A mookhuthi is not bought often. When you do buy one, it should last decades, not seasons.
