A white gold Moissanite ring — back in our workshop after one year of daily wear

A client brought her white gold Moissanite ring back to us after a year of everyday wear — not because something had gone wrong, but for its first service. A repolish. A clean. A rhodium replating. The kind of maintenance that keeps fine jewellery looking exactly as it did the day it was made.

We filmed it. Because what the ring looked like after twelve months of real life — and what it looked like after we were done — tells you more about white gold and Moissanite than any product description ever could.

Part One

The White Gold — What Changed and Why

After a year of daily wear, the ring had developed a visible yellowing around the prongs and on the reverse of the band. To most people, this might look like deterioration. It is not. It is simply gold being gold.

White gold does not exist in nature. Pure gold is inherently, deeply yellow — and no alloying process changes that fundamental truth. What jewellers do to create white gold is mix the gold with whitening metals and then plate the finished piece with rhodium — a naturally white, highly reflective metal from the platinum group. That rhodium layer is what gives white gold its bright, crisp finish when you first receive it.

"The yellowing you see after a year of wear is not damage. It is the rhodium layer thinning — and the gold beneath, in its natural colour, beginning to show through. This is exactly what white gold does. It has always done this."

The areas that yellow first are always the ones that experience the most contact — the prongs that grip the stone, the underside of the band. After twelve months of daily wear, the rhodium there has worn through to the yellow gold beneath.

What This Means for You

White gold requires rhodium replating approximately once a year to restore its original white finish. At Vai Ra, replating is complimentary for pieces purchased with us — simply drop the ring to our Panjagutta store and collect it restored. If you are buying white gold knowing this, it becomes a complete non-issue.

Our Collection

Moissanite Rings — Built to Last a Lifetime

Every ring below is crafted in 18KT gold with certified Moissanite — the same stone that, after a year of daily wear in the video above, sparkled identically to day one.

Part Two

The Moissanite — Exactly as It Was

Here is what did not change. The Moissanite centre stone — after a full year of daily wear, of showers and sleep and dishes and handwashing — sparkled identically to the day the ring was first made.

This is one of Moissanite's most important and least discussed qualities. It is not just a durable stone — it is a stone that does not accumulate wear in any visible way. The facets do not dull. The brilliance does not diminish. Silicon carbide, at 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale, is one of the hardest materials on earth. Everyday life simply cannot scratch it.

"Regardless of the amount of use — Moissanite is a forever stone. The sparkle you buy is the sparkle you keep, for as long as the ring exists."

Moissanite vs Diamond — On Durability

Diamonds score 10 on the Mohs scale. Moissanite scores 9.25 — the second hardest gemstone used in jewellery. In practical terms, both are scratch-proof under everyday conditions. No fingernail, no countertop, no daily contact will mark either stone. For daily wear jewellery, the durability difference between diamond and Moissanite is zero.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does white gold need to be replated?
For everyday wear rings, rhodium replating is typically needed once a year. The prongs and underside of the band are always the first areas to show yellowing, as these are the highest-friction zones. Pieces worn less frequently may go two to three years between replating.
Is rhodium replating expensive?
At Vai Ra, rhodium replating is complimentary for all pieces purchased with us — simply bring the ring to our Panjagutta, Hyderabad store. For pieces purchased elsewhere, replating is a standard jewellery service available at most workshops and is not a significant cost relative to the value of the piece.
Does the yellowing of white gold mean the ring is low quality?
Not at all. Yellowing is the natural behaviour of white gold and happens to every white gold piece regardless of quality or karat. It is a characteristic of the material, not a defect. Higher-quality white gold may hold plating slightly longer, but all white gold will yellow at the prongs over regular wear.
Will Moissanite lose its sparkle over time?
No. Moissanite's brilliance is a permanent property of the stone. What can temporarily reduce visible sparkle is the buildup of skin oils beneath the stone, which is easily removed with warm water and a soft brush. The stone itself does not change.
Should I choose white gold or yellow gold for a Moissanite ring?
Both work beautifully with Moissanite. White gold provides a colour-matched setting that makes the stone appear larger and icier. Yellow gold creates a warm contrast and requires no replating. If you prefer low maintenance, yellow or rose gold is the more practical choice. If you love the look of white metal, white gold with annual replating delivers exactly that.
Is Moissanite a good choice for an engagement ring worn daily?
Moissanite is one of the best choices for a daily-wear engagement ring. At 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale, it is effectively scratch-proof under everyday conditions. It does not chip, cloud, or lose brilliance — exactly what this ring, after a year of daily use, demonstrated.
